"Young Goodman Brown" Questions Answered

  1. Hawthorne's purpose for writing this story is to expose the faith of the Puritans.
  2. After reading the story, Faith's name is no longer aptly because Brown lost his faith in Faith. In the beginning of the story, Brown did have true faith in her until he saw Faith at the ceremony and that caused the loss of faith.
  3. Faith's pink ribbons signify Faith's innocence and true faith, so when Brown saw her pink ribbons fall, he began to lose faith in her.
  4. In my opinion, everything Brown witnessed was a dream because the text heavily leans towards a dream. For example, "Had Goodman Brown fallen asleep in the forest, and only dreamed a wild dream of a witch meeting?"
  5. I think the old man was the devil for a couple reasons. One reason is that he had a staff that looked like such a realistic snake and in biblical references, the snake symbolizes the devil. Another reason is that in the text it says that the old man knew the father and grandfather of Goodman Brown, and if this were the case, the old man would not be alive anymore, hinting to immortality.
  6. I believe the staff represents the devil and his dark power. I also believe that it is his own conscience that makes him go onward because the devil is speaking to him and he is just doing what the devil tells him to do even though he doesn't want to.
  7. If Brown had not ventured into the forest, obviously his life would be different because he would have no reason to have doubt in his Faith and his fellow townspoeple. Brown would have continued to live his life normally and happily, not sad and gloomy as he actually lived it before he died.
